Shopping On-Line is Safe

Provided the purchaser takes a few precautions like in most anything else, shopping on-line is safe.
·         Don’t’ use multiple credit cards.  Assign one card only for all of your on-line shopping this way you’ll always be able to quickly detect and correct any mistakes or overcharges.
·         Don’t keep credit card information on your computer system since hackers can crawl or spider-bot for this information.
·         Before actually processing a purchase make sure the site is in secure mode with the little (yellow or orange) lock icon easily recognizable.
·         Visit the site you’re purchasing from several times before actually making the purchase.  The reason for this is so that you can verify consistency and that the site is a bona-fide retailer.  Hackers try to imitate sites and lure prospective purchasers.  These sites are easily caught and reported and their imitation site gets taken down.  By visiting the site you’re interested in several weeks before the actual purchase you’ll become more familiar with the site and the product you will be purchasing.
Precautions For On-line Shoppers
(1)    Allow at least three to four weeks for delivery.
(2)    If item is a gift, be specific in instructions for gift card.  Include the recipient’s name and address as well as your own.
(3)    Carefully read descriptions of products in catalogs, and note size, weight, contents, etc.  (Pictures can be misleading, pay attention to detail and specifications).
(4)    Keep shipping label as proof of purchase in case of dissatisfaction.
(5)    Inspect items as soon as they arrive to see if everything is enclosed and undamaged.

Note:  If complaints to the company about quality of goods, misrepresentation of the product, etc., go unanswered, write the Postal Inspection Service, 475 L’Enfant Plaza West, SW, Washington, DC 20260.  To investigate fraud:  Write the Bureau of Consumer Protection, Federal Trade Commission, Pennsylvania Ave. & 6th St., NW, Washington, DC 20580.
